Of the 22 Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan in just under a decade, 12 have died as a result of the explosion of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) set by Taliban insurgents.

IEDs come in many shapes and sizes.

But in the simplest form, an IED comprises one of the ubiquitous yellow four-litre palm oil containers filled with fertiliser-based explosive, typically a mixture of ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel.

Into that is inserted a detonator, attached to an electrical circuit comprising a battery and a switch.

In Afghanistan that switch can be what's called a "sawblade initiator'' - a handsaw blade on a wooden frame buried to lie in wait for a passing soldier or Afghan child whose footfall flexes the blade, closes the electrical circuit and detonates the explosive.

IEDs have been used in every conflict since the invention of explosives.

But the IED really took off as the insurgent weapon of choice in Iraq, aided by the vast caches of military equipment and explosives accumulated under Saddam Hussein and speedily looted following the US invasion. [ continue]

Improvised explosive devices
– homemade bombs –
are the conflict's biggest killer of troops and civilians

Rob Evans
guardian.co.uk

It begins with a relative trickle in the east of Afghanistan in 2004. Five years later it is the Taliban's favoured weapon across the country and the biggest killer of coalition soldiers by a large margin.

But the IED – improvised explosive device – not only strikes foreign troops on ground patrols and in road convoys, it is also an indiscriminate terror weapon killing and injuring thousands of civilians.

The unprecedented mass of data in the leaked war logs presents the most comprehensive picture yet of successful violence by the Taliban. The soaring number of attacks by these increasingly powerful homemade bombs can clearly be seen to be focused in the southern and eastern provinces.

In 2004, according to the logs, there were 308 makeshift bombs; last year there were 7,155. Taliban fighters in total planted more than 16,000 IEDs in those five years.

On 22 June last year, in Khost in eastern Afghanistan, the US military log says: "A little boy picked up the IED and it exploded in his hands killing him. The IED blast caused people to gather around the little boy, then a motorcycle drive up and detonated his suicide IED motorcycle." The end result was reported to be nine civilians killed and 42 wounded. [ continue]

Our vision is through the Eyes of Soldiers and secured by the Canine 6th Sense of Smell. The Canine is man's best friend and his best chance of survival. We train for survival by looking for answers right under our noses.

We strive to ensure every soldier and canine team comes home as Veterans. Our experience in military service and being canine partners gives us a unique advantage in preparing IDDs (Improvised Detection Dogs) for service in today's Military, Borders, and throughout the States. We are veterans with veteran service dogs at our side every day. We know the difference they can make because we have lived the experience for years. Just ask us about the life saving skills a service dog has or the intelligence they possess. Our own lives have been in the paws of canines and saved by the canine. This is more than a job to us; these Dogs have and will continue to SAVE LIVES and LIMBS.

Are you prepared for the theater?
